MessageLabs:
MessageLabs Email Anti-Spam dramatically reduces the amount of unsolicited messages reaching your organization, eliminating the loss of employee productivity associated with reading and deleting spam and substantially reducing the technical infrastructure related to processing, storage and bandwidth costs associated with spam.

MessageLabs Email Anti-Virus provides your organization with 100% protection from viruses, phishing, trojans and other forms of malware, saving you from spending extensive time and resources dealing with outbreaks and the associated clean-up.

MessageLabs clients point their Mail Exchange (MX) record to MessageLabs
Email is directed through MessageLabs and handed to the clients mail server(s)
Known spam and viruses are intercepted through signatures; unknown spam and viruses are picked up by Skeptic
When a virus is detected, the email is automatically stopped and held in quarantine for 30 days
Both the sender and the recipient are notified immediately
Email identified as spam can be re-directed using multiple re-routing options, which include: block/delete; forward to a bulk mailbox; append the message header; or quarantine Administrators and / or end users can manage items in the quarantine
Anti-Virus Link Following checks linked websites for viruses or other types of potentially harmful content
If a suspicious link is confirmed as viral, a signature is created, and further emails containing that link are treated as being infected with a virus. Any email containing a confirmed viral link will be quarantined
Approved / blocked sender lists can be configured
All threats are managed away from the clients networks

MessageLabs multi-layered defences

As part of the ongoing battle against unwanted email from spammers, virus writers and other malware authors, MessageLabs continues to invest in and deploy innovative techniques at the perimeter of its infrastructure. MessageLabs has pulled back the identification and rejection of known unwanted email well before the domain of the Anti-Spam and Anti-Virus services through the deployment of Traffic Management and Connection Management capabilities. Traffic management slows down spam at the TCP/IP layer, while connection management uses heuristics to block unsolicited email at the connection layer and prevents dictionary attacks at the user management layer.

Beyond MessageLabs perimeter defences, a collection of market-leading third party scanning engines also provide signature-based anti-spam and anti-virus protection. MessageLabs is constantly monitoring its roster of commercial engines for their effectiveness and complementary strengths. To identify unknown and new spam, MessageLabs Anti-Spam and Anti-Virus use Skeptics predictive technology which incorporates thousands of heuristics rules, Bayesian learning, smart signatures, fuzzy fingerprinting and dynamic header analysis. Skeptic predictive technology proactively monitors, tracks and provides industry-defining protection against emerging threats before they compromise the organizational network.

Continuous and automatic updates are performed across the network through the global database replication architecture, providing zero-hour protection from even the most advanced malware long before traditional spam and virus signatures are available, thereby eliminating the window of vulnerability.
